India PM calls for a graduated approach toward EV & ICE coexistence

It is a well-known fact that it is necessary to reduce carbon footprint to curb pollutions. Thus, Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has recently made an assertion that internal combustion engine (ICE)-based automobiles and Electric Vehicles (EV) can coexist on an urgent basis to prevent the adverse effects of climate change.
Since the last few years, India has progressed consistently in the arena of renewable energy and its associated sectors. Hence, to enhance competitiveness in the global mobility sector, India has to utilize the strengths of the latest technologies in the auto industry. Services of e-vehicles like an electric rickshaw in Jharkhand and I-cat approved eco-friendly rickshaw in Bihar have paved the way in this regard.

Some statistical facts and why we should look beyond

The worth of the Indian automobile sector is around INR 4.8 lakh crores. It is equivalent to 7.5% of the total GDP. Around 37 million Indians are working in this sector which provides 49% of the manufacturing GDP. Though these achievements have encouraged investors and the economy, we cannot ignore the issue of global climate change. To reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, the government has put a lot of pan-India efforts. Some of these efforts include giving approvals to run different types of e-vehicles for commute of passengers and helping the owners of those vehicles get necessary permits easily.

E-Vehicles & ICE co-existence: A part of the strategic plan to reach climate goals

India needs a strategic transition plan to fight climate change. The government needs to take initiatives to make EVs the strong competitors of ICE-based vehicles. This cannot be done overnight undoubtedly. But, tactical steps must be taken so that investors or potential owners rely on EVs. With simple processes of getting permits, gradually, EVs will dominate the Indian roads.

To create a fully clean and zero-emission mobility ecosystem, India emphasizes the growth of renewable energy capacity. Thus, e-vehicles can charge their rechargeable batteries using current generated from renewable sources. Currently, in India, the capacity of total installed sources of renewable energy is 80 Gigawatts (GW). There are many new ongoing projects and by 2030, the renewable energy capacity will be 830 GW.

Other future prospects

The government’s current strategy will allow EVs and ICE-based vehicles to coexist for the next 30 to 40 years. It can be assumed that during this period, a lot of employment opportunities will be created in the sectors involving EVs. For example, various types of electric rickshaws in Bihar and Jharkhand have become the sources of livelihoods for many unemployed young people residing in state capitals, small towns and rural areas. Also, many investors are taking the dealerships of e-vehicles. Hence, a lot of unemployed individuals can find jobs in showrooms, workshops and delivery joints.
