The most common type of battery used for e-rickshaws is a lead acid battery, which uses sponge lead, Lead Peroxide as electrodes, and dilutes Sulphuric acid as the electrolytes. Deep cycle lead batteries are generally used as solar batteries. E-rickshaws themselves being extremely economical in nature use lead acid batteries which are the most economical when it comes to large power applications and where the weight of the battery is not a big issue. These batteries are simple to manufacture, are reliable and have low self-discharge.

Apart from most e-rickshaws using lead acid batteries, quite a few e-rickshaws also operate on lithium ion batteries. A lithium ion battery is a tad bit expensive than lead acid batteries, but have a minimal weight and can be charged in very less time. Lithium ion batteries also need very low maintenance.
