Indian Government Waives Registration Fees for Battery Operated Vehicles

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways India, has decided to waive registration charges for e-vehicles. This decision comes from the government in order to provide a boost to battery-operated or electric vehicles in the country. After the draft notification to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989, was issued, the ministry said that battery operated e-vehicles would be exempted from payment of fees if they wanted to renew or issue the registration certificate and new registration mark. The exemption will be applicable to all categories of vehicles, including two-wheelers. This clearly implies that the electric vehicles would be exempted from such registration charges.

Boosting electric mobility in India

The proposal follows the efforts of the government to have a larger portion of the vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries by 2030. As per reports, the government’s think tank NITI Aayog has also suggested that after 2030, sales of only electric vehicles will be permitted. The amendments will be done in exercise of the powers bestowed on the central government under different sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. As per the draft notification, “The said draft rules shall be taken into consideration after the expiry of a period of 30 days from the date on which the copies of this notification will be made available to the people in general.”

Increased production of e-rickshaws and e-vehicles for curbing pollution

Last year, the Centre had also specified rules for plying e-rickshaws and enhancing production of electric vehicles in India, making driver’s licence mandatory and capping speed limit at 25 kmph. The government had also notified the Central Motor Vehicles (16th Amendment) Rules, 2014, paving the way for plying of the “special purpose battery operated vehicles”. The new rules allowed e-rickshaws to carry four passengers and 40kg luggage while e-carts could transport goods up to 310kg. Mr. Nitin Gadkari, the road transport and highways minister, said that it is high time that India wakes up and says yes to green vehicles like e-rickshaws to control high level of pollution.

The end note…

The move, if implemented, is expected to be highly beneficial for all those who are looking forward to buy electric vehicles. At Jezza Motors, we have a huge collection of electric vehicles which have a very long life, have an incredibly low maintenance charges and are also economical as compared to other non-conventional fuel vehicles. Not only I-CAT approved eco friendly rickshaw in Bihar, our e-vehicles have great demand in other states as well. We also have a number of new models of electric vehicles in the pipeline.
