The future of electric vehicles in India – A carefully mapped road!

To address the issue of global climate change, it is necessary to reduce carbon footprints at every corner of the world. The latest report of the International Council for Clean Transportation states that in India an estimated 74,000 deaths of premature babies may have taken place due to air pollution caused by the transport sector in 2015. In this regard, it is to be noted that on the roads of India, after every 8-10 years, the number of vehicles gets doubled.
India depends hugely on fossil fuels to meet her energy requirements. But, to reduce this dependency, the government has started various projects to produce and utilize renewable energy effectively. Many private investors have started to manufacture electric vehicles and the government is taking a lot of initiatives so that the owners of these vehicles can get various permits and documents easily. Services offered by different types of battery-operated rickshaw in Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal and a few other Indian states can be counted as examples.

Initiatives taken by the Indian Government and a few other statistical facts

The Indian Government has taken some essential steps so that investors can be attracted to build manufacturing units of E-vehicles in India. The GST rate on these vehicles has been slashed from 12% to 5%. The government wants the co-existence of conventional, hybrid and fully electric vehicles so that by 2030 penetration of EVs can reach 30% at least. Slowly and steadily, the number of charging points is being increased in urban areas.  Keep in mind that if India achieves this goal, she will be able to prevent CO2 emissions produced from 474 million tonnes of oil.

For retail owners of E-vehicles, various fiscal benefits will be provided. For example, if you buy an E-rickshaw in Bihar or any other Indian state, you can demand rebates on income tax of up to INR 150,000 on interest paid on loans.

Future prospects of electric vehicles in India

According to a survey conducted by Economic Times in May 2019, 90% of car owners of India are willing to switch to E-vehicles. However, at present, the EV market in India covers only 1% of the total automobile market. Also, 95% of total sales in the EV market are from electric two-wheelers.

Various state governments are buying electric buses and operating them in the PPP model. Also, the demand for electric rickshaws has increased among unemployed young people. They use them to ferry passengers and earn livelihoods.
